Soft furnishings for Counselling room chairsThese were looking very thin and worn as they are sat on for 50 minutes at a time. They are part of the counselling room where patients and their relatives can spend time with our Macmillan nurses. Here they can receive counselling, support and hypnotherapy to help with some of the emotional issues surrounding cancer.

Kneefix cushions
These are needed to support our radiotherapy patients receiving treatment. They give better comfort to the patient and help imobilise for precision treatment.

'Baby' Linacs
These are complete miniature versions for the clinical Linear Accelerators used to deliver radiotherapy to patients. They would allow radiographers to model and plan radiotherapy before the patient started their treatment, maximising accuracy, making the treatment more efficient and minimising the time spent having to prepare for treatment in the full size clinical Linacs.

Mobile/portable hearing loops
A portable inducton desk loop system suitable for one-to-one communication with someone with an hearing aid. No wires or setting up, other than lifting the unit onto a table.

Music has been found to be widely beneficial to patients undergoing radiotherapy, helping relaxation and relieving stress. It is hoped to buy a CD player for each of the 5 Linear Accelerators at the Sussex Cancer Centre.

Breast Gowns
At present, patients completely undress, leaving them feeling exposed. Breast gowns aid patient comfort, helping provide dignity and modesty. They would be provided to the patient for the length of their treatment and returned to the centre at the end.

PAT sides are required by the radiotherapy department to allow the easy and safe movements of patients from trolleys to our treatment couches.

Breast board with attachments
Kings Church donated £8500 to purchase a breast board with attachments which is used for treating patients with breast cancer. Also purchased was a Bolus which is required to alter the percentage of radiation treating the surface of the patient. Miss Joan Emmeline Mackenzie
Equipment that enables us to develop the planning of radiotherapy treatments of brain tumours in two ways, has been funded in memory of the late Joan Emmeline Mackenzie (legacy of £220,000). We have ordered additional computer workstations, which will increase access to our existing system for clinical and planning staff. We have also ordered new, advanced software to enable us to make further developments in planning very complex treatments.

900 Series Type E Contamination Monitor with ZP1490 GM tube
For extra protection for engineers when dealing with invasive faults on the linear accelerators to avoid unnecessary radiation dose, department supplies all staff with radiation badges but these are only read at the end of the month and don't give an instant indication.

A successful fundraising event ment that the Fund are able to proceed in purchasing a treatment couch to replace their existing Impression-making Patient Table.

Chrome step stool with handle
A sturdy, stool with chrome plated steel frame. The stool has a non-slip textured mat on the surface. The rail, attached to one side of the step, helps to give the user extra confidence and stability. Rubber ferrules provide good grip on slippery surfaces.

Portable CD player
Used as part of the complementary hypnotherapy and counselling offered to patients to help with anxiety, insomnia and depression. This would allow sessions to be recorded, enabling patients to practise techniques at home which has be shown to be helpful in alleviating these problems.

At present the clinic rooms examination couches are very old and difficult for patients to use. They are not height adjustable and have to use steps so patients can get on/off them. For frail patients this can be very difficult and on occasions some patients can not use the couches.
The electric couches are able to height adjust and are slighter wider making them more comfortable for the patient and more user friendly. We are able to use the electric couch for very frail patients.

Sensewear Band
This is a band which patients wear on their upper arm for 24 hours and it measures their energy requirements. This would be a really useful way of developing accurate nutritional care plans to meet the patients energy expenditure. This should ultimately help to minimise the weight loss of individual patients who are struggling to meet their daily needs nutritionally and more effectively measure and monitor them.

Heat Pads
Heat pads over the arm can ease discomfort when chemotherapy is infused. A small cost item that can makes a real difference to patient comfort.

Digital Hand Dynamometer
This tool is used to measure patients strength, this is particularly useful if they have been losing weight. Together with a percentage body weight loss it can assist an overall assessment of a patients nutritional needs pre and during treatment. It may also be useful as a measure to support which treatment would best suit the patients needs and can be used to plot progress through the patients journey.
