Paul’s Birthday Fundraiser

Paul Wheatley contacted us to let us know he was setting up a Birthday Fundraiser in aid of the Sussex Cancer Fund. We wanted to know a little more about why he had chosen the Sussex Cancer Fund.

Paul’s Story

“I read about SCF whilst sitting in one of the many hospital waiting rooms which have now become my home since last July’s diagnosis. My wife, Debbie and I were grateful in those early days to experience the tranquility of The Horizon Centre ( and the free parking ) as opposed to the hospital itself.

I’m sure every other cancer patient appreciates that waiting to see your consultant for an update on scans etc. is unsettling at best so a calm and relaxing solution such as the Horizon Centre is most welcome.

I’ve spoken with Julia (SCF Fund Manager) on a number of occasions and met with her earlier this year with my daughter with an idea for a significant fundraising event. I was a little surprised as to, relatively speaking, how small the fund is and I was determined to find a way to make my own contribution.

I like many have been touched by Cancer’s grip; lost my best friend at 20, 2 friends continue to survive after treatment- 25 and 8 years on respectively and lost a former colleague just 2 months ago. So…..

For my 55th birthday this year, I’m asking for donations to Sussex Cancer Fund. I’ve chosen this charity because their mission means a lot to me and I have already benefited directly from their services. My family and many of my friends will know that I was diagnosed last summer with kidney cancer which has spread to my liver. Currently, it’s not operable or curable only kept at bay with a daily targeted chemo tablet. For me fortunately for now anyway, life goes on and I am, considering, in otherwise great health and continue to live life to the full.
