Two modern patient trolleys were purchased as a result of the fundraising efforts of our fantastic supporters Emma Knight and Penny Cattaneo & David Shannon.

 

The trolleys, costing £3000 each will really make a difference to patients and staff at the centre. These state of the art trolleys have many design features designed to improve comfort and usability.

 

 

 

5 new nebulisers for patients receiving treatment at the CourtYard 8 ward at BSUH.

The nebulisers cost about £100 each and are given to patients for use at home which means a quicker discharge.

 

 

SLA battery tester
Tests batteries typically used in UPS etc that may have a future life left but we have no way of testing them. By re-using these batteries we would save money, time and the environment. approx £300. Kindly donated by Paul Grimwood and colleagues at ASL

Soft furnishings for Counseling room chairs
These were looking very thin and worn as they are sat on for 50 minutes at a time.  They are part of the counselling room where patients and their relatives can spend time with our Macmillan nurses.  Here they can receive counselling, support and hypnotherapy to help with some of the emotional issues surrounding cancer. Cost £240 – purchased with funds raised by Brighton and Hove City Council.  Very many thanks.

 

Porta-neb SideStream nebuliser compressors
The perfect nebuliser compressor for use at home for nebulising bronchodilator (reliever) treatments.
For patients who have head and neck cancer having radiotherapy treatment to aid thick secretions and help provide comfort and avoid admissions to hospital.  The nebuliser would be given on loan for the period of radiotherapy.

‘Baby’ Linacs
These are complete miniature versions for the clinical Linear Accelerators used to deliver radiotherapy to patients.  They would allow radiographers to model and plan radiotherapy before the patient started their treatment, maximising accuracy, making the treatment more efficient and minimising the time spent having to prepare for treatment in the full size clinical Linacs.

Mobile/portable hearing loops
A portable inducton desk loop system suitable for one-to-one communication with someone with an hearing aid.  No wires or setting up, other than lifting the unit onto a table.

Music has been found to be widely beneficial to patients undergoing radiotherapy, helping relaxation and relieving stress.  It is hoped to buy a CD player for each of the 5 Linear Accelerators at the Sussex Cancer Centre.

Breast Gowns
At present, patients completely undress, leaving them feeling exposed.  Breast gowns aid patient comfort, helping provide dignity and modesty.  They would be provided to the patient for the length of their treatment and returned to the centre at the end.

PAT slides
PAT sides are required by the radiotherapy department to allow the easy and safe movements of patients from trolleys to our treatment couches.

Breast board with attachments
Kings Church donated £8500 to purchase a breast board with attachments which is used for treating patients with breast cancer. Also purchased was a Bolus which is required to alter the percentage of radiation treating the surface of the patient. Resus Trolley and Defibrilator
Needed to provide the quickest emergency life saving support for acutely unwell patients in radiotherapy.

Breast board trolley
Each Linear Accelerator (the machine that delivers radiotherapy) treats 40-50 patients daily, on different parts of the body.  The board used for breast cancer patients is extremely heavy, slow and difficult to manouveur.  These trolleys would enable quick and safe set up in between patients, alleviating unnecessary delay and additionally protecting staff from possible injury.

Digital cameras
To comply with NHS policy regarding patient identification of patients, a photo of each patient is required.  As patients no longer routinely attend the simulator where the photo is taken, cameras are needed in the radiotherapy department to ensure the correct procedure is followed prior to treatment.

O2 regulator
The BCON clinical trial has demonstrated that the use of Carbogen (a gas that is 98% oxygen) and Nicotinamide (vitamin B) when used with radiotherapy significantly improves overall survival and local relapse. We are looking to purchase a regulator for the administration of Carbogen gas so that more patients can benefit from this treatment.

This book would provide an essential source of reference for the new Brachytherapy service being set up at the Sussex Cancer Centre. We will be undertaking HDR treatments never done in Brighton before, and this book will be useful to the whole multidisciplinary team.

Equipment that enables us to develop the planning of radiotherapy treatments of brain tumours in two ways, has been funded in memory of the late Joan Emmeline Mackenzie (legacy of £220,000).  We have ordered additional computer workstations, which will increase access to our existing system for clinical and planning staff. We have also ordered new, advanced software to enable us to make further developments in planning very complex treatments.

For QA of MRI scans and their fusion with CT scans. Enables check of anatomical information used for treatment planning.
